چکیده

We present theoretically-established values of the CO-to-H2 and C-to-H2 conversion factors that may be used to estimate the gas masses of external galaxies. We consider four distinct galaxy types, represented by M51, NGC6946, M82 and SMC N27. The physical parameters that best represent the conditions within the molecular clouds in each of the galaxy types are estimated using a χ analysis of several observed atomic fine structure and CO rotational lines. This analysis is explored over a wide range of density, radiation field, extinction, and other relevant parameters. Using these estimated physical conditions in methods that we have previously established, CO-toH2 conversion factors are then computed for CO transitions up to J = 9→ 8. For the conventional CO(1–0) transition, the computed conversion factor varies significantly below and above the canonical value for the Milky Way in the four galaxy types considered. Since atomic carbon emission is now frequently used as a probe of external galaxies, we also present, for the first time, the C-to-H2 conversion factor for this emission in the four galaxy types considered.

Molecular line intensities as measures of cloud masses - I. Sensitivity of CO emissions to physical parameter variations

A reliable estimate of the molecular gas content in galaxies plays a crucial role in determining their dynamical and star-forming properties. However, H2, the dominant molecular species, is difficult to observe directly, particularly in the regions where most molecular gas is thought to reside. Its mass is therefore commonly inferred by assuming a direct proportionality with the integrated inte...

The dwarf elliptical galaxy NGC 185— the closest early-type galaxy with detectable molecular gas— offers a unique opportunity for high angular resolution studies of the interstellar medium in early-type galaxies. I present interferometric images (17 pc × 14 pc resolution) of CO emission from NGC 185. The majority of the molecular gas in NGC 185 is in one resolved cloud, closely associated with ...

Dynamical Masses in Luminous Infrared Galaxies

We have studied the dynamics and masses of a sample of ten nearby luminous and ultraluminous infrared galaxies (LIRGS and ULIRGs), using 2.3μm CO absorption line spectroscopy and nearinfrared Hand Ks-band imaging. By combining velocity dispersions derived from the spectroscopy, disk scale-lengths obtained from the imaging, and a set of likely model density profiles, we calculate dynamical masse...

Ionized Gas in the Smith Cloud

We present Wisconsin Hα Mapper observations of ionized gas in the Smith Cloud, a high velocity cloud which Lockman et al. have recently suggested is interacting with the Galactic disk. Our Hα map shows the brightest Hα emission, 0.43± 0.04 R, coincident with the brightest H I, while slightly fainter Hα emission (0.25 ± 0.02 R) is observed in a region with H I intensities < 0.1 times as bright a...

The Production of H i in Photodissociation Regions and A Comparison with CO(1–0) Emission

The gas at the surfaces of molecular clouds in galaxies is heated and dissociated by photons from young stars both near and far. H i resulting from the dissociation of molecular hydrogen H2 emits hyperfine line emission at 21 cm, and warmed CO emits dipole rotational lines such as the 2.6 mm line of CO(1–0). We use previously developed models for photodissociation regions (PDRs) to compute the ...
